The Cardiff Rose takes its name from a legendary pirate entertainment troupe that performed at Renaissance Faires across California for over 17 years. Part swashbucklers, part storytellers, part philosophers in doublets — the original Cardiff Rose crew brought together an unlikely mix of scientists, artists, teachers, and dreamers who shared one thing in common: an absolute refusal to be boring.
They performed sword fights and sang sea shanties. They debated physics between shows and argued about the Oxford comma over flagons of mead. They were proudly, unapologetically nerdy before nerdiness was fashionable — and they would not have had it any other way.
A New Voyage
In its current form, The Cardiff Rose channels that same spirit of curiosity, wonder, and unashamed nerdiness into writing. We cover the topics that make our minds light up: science, mathematics, geek culture, and the curious life. We write about why Carl Sagan still matters, how the Fibonacci sequence shapes fashion, and what pirates and physicists have in common.
We are not a product review site. We are not a news outlet. We are a culture magazine for people who find the world genuinely fascinating — and who refuse to apologize for it.
Our Philosophy
We believe that curiosity is the highest virtue. That knowing things is cool. That the person who lights up when talking about molecular gastronomy or medieval siege engines is infinitely more interesting than the person who has carefully ensured they do not care too much about anything.
We believe in the pirate spirit — not the plundering kind, but the questioning kind. The willingness to look at the established order and ask, "What if there is another way?" Whether that question leads to a scientific breakthrough or a really good conversation at a dinner party, the asking is what matters.
Who We Are
The Cardiff Rose is written and curated by R. Blackwood, a lifelong nerd, occasional Renaissance Faire attendee, and firm believer that the best conversations happen when someone says, "Okay, this is going to sound wild, but..."
If you share our love of science, wonder, and the beautifully nerdy, you have found your crew. Welcome aboard.
